GANJAKU Castel (岩石城)

Historical   |   Castle   | Exterior

Built in 1158, by order of legendary Shogun Kiomori Taira, Ganjaku Castle and the rugged mountains of Ganjaku-zan is where some of Japan’s greatest swordsmen, like Kojiro Sasaki acquired their skills and left their mark carved in stone on the mountain top. The castle fell in 1587 to Hideyoshi Toyotomi as he unified Kyushu and was rebuilt in 1991. Once considered to be unconquerable, the mighty exterior look of the castle perched in its lush green mountain setting embodies the essence of old-world Japanese fortification.

Some of the high-lights in this location

This location has 30 sets of samurai armor and swords that can be used for filming, along with other essential props to depict life in feudal Japan. Local principle and background actors are abundant, cooperative and still embody the look and carry on the unique traditions of old-world Japan. The castle has a large fortified gate with a sloped stone lead-up that can accommodate vans and micro buses for bringing gear, cast and crew directly to the castle.
