GANJAKU Castel (岩石城)
Historical | Castle | Exterior
Built in 1158, by order of legendary Shogun Kiomori Taira, Ganjaku Castle and the rugged mountains of Ganjaku-zan is where some of Japan’s greatest swordsmen, like Kojiro Sasaki acquired their skills and left their mark carved in stone on the mountain top. The castle fell in 1587 to Hideyoshi Toyotomi as he unified Kyushu and was rebuilt in 1991. Once considered to be unconquerable, the mighty exterior look of the castle perched in its lush green mountain setting embodies the essence of old-world Japanese fortification.
