IWAYA JINJA (岩屋神社)
Historical | Shrine | Exterior
Hidden in the mountains amongst the tallest moss-covered cedar trees in Japan and endless stone paved mountain passages laid by Yamabushi warrior monks more than a thousand years ago, is this dramatic and visually stunning location with a unique (out of this world) origin story. The dramatic change in contrast and distinctive colors of all four seasons is the most striking and prominent in this part of Japan.
Interesting legend
On a cold winter night in the year 547 AD, witnesses observed a luminous orb descending from the sky and silently landing on a sacred mountain peak know for centuries as a place of legend and folklore. Japanese “Gods” all descended from the stars… and when monks reached the place where the orb entered the mountain, they described finding a mysterious “brilliant glowing round stone”, that caused each who examined it to loose their eye sight. They incapsulated the glowing stone that had been sent from the Gods in thick material to protect themselves and built a shrine around it to worship the gift from the stars. This is Iwaya Shine. Built into the side of the mountain where it still protects the gift from the gods that landed here 1500 years ago.
