ZAIZOUBOU (財蔵坊)
Historical | Interior | Exterior
Irreplaceable authenticity in this sprawling 7-room Edo-period mountain house offers fantastic shooting options with minimal need for art & staging department masking. With a real hand-thatched roof, functional Edo-period kitchen and mud-packed perimeter floors surrounding the raised tatami rooms and a fully useable attic area for amazing depictions of life during the period, this house structure is one of the best available throughout Japan that still sits in its original, natural setting. (See the video presentation and VR tour) The surrounding gardens and mountain location provide an unimpeded backdrop for the camera with no modern buildings, fences or other obstacles that need to be painted out of scenes in post. The floorplan works well as a mid-level ranking Samurai house, family farm house, Ronin mountain retreat, etc… (see sample video)
Zaizo Bo sits along old Japan’s longest original stone stairway that stretches an entire kilometer up to the main mountain shrine of Hikosan Jingu (est. 546AD). There are numerous stone-paved mountain passages, inns, shops and other edo-period structures and vistas that offer additional shot options all within the samelocation without requiring a company move. The dramatic change of seasons provides four distinct looks that represent the best of traditional Japan. The flowering Sakura season in the spring followed by the deep lush Japanese moss-covered green of summer, the stunning autumn season and the occasional snow of winter… All captured through the camera lens offer the undeniable authentic look of Japan. With plenty of authentic antiquities available at this location, the need for outsourcing props is minimal. The knowledgeable property managers are also wonderful technical advisors when assuring authenticity is desired.
